Monitored Daily Intake (MDI)

A Monitored Daily Intake is a special type of diet record used in controlled feeding studies. In general, controlled feeding studies provide either menus of specific foods and beverages or the actual foods that participants must consume during study. Some study protocols permit additional foods, which must be recorded on the MDI. Foods prescribed but not consumed are also recorded on the MDI. NASR research nutritionists code and enter this information into NDS-R, which allows investigators to determine the precise study diet quantities consumed. NASR staff must train and certify project staff in the proper procedures to complete and document MDIs (see Training).
