Work-study students should contact the human resources department of Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.
A summer research program for undergraduate students going into their final term/year of studies in fall of 2010 is established at Fred Hutchinson. This program is currently administrated by Dr. Maxine Linial (Basic Sciences Division) and Dr. Katie Peichel (Human Biology Division) and by Ms. Lori Blake (Division of Basic Sciences Administration). Students spend a nine week period as part of a research team after selecting an area of interest, such as: cellular biology, developmental biology, evolutionary biology, genetics, membrane biology, molecular biology, molecular immunology, structural biology, oncogenes, or virology. Weekly faculty research seminars and career development workshops take place throughout the summer, and students are encouraged to participate in other center colloquia and seminars.
For the summer of 2010, the intern program runs from June 13 through August 14 (including travel days). Students must be able to commit to the dates of the program to apply and to be considered for acceptance in the program.
The current stipend for the 9-week program is $4000. Housing and meals costs are paid directly by the students in the program. Fred Hutchinson negotiates and facilitates a housing option for out-of-town students at Stevens Court residence hall, an apartment-style residence hall at the University of Washington. This facility is about 10 minutes from the center by bus. The approximate cost at Stevens Court is $1400 for 9 weeks, and students in the intern program are housed together in individual four-person apartments on a same-sex basis. Passes for regional Metro transport (buses) are provided to students for the summer at an approximate cost of $45.
A list of recent students and the schedule of events is available.
Application for summer, 2010 must be submitted online by January 30, 2010.
