Attention sophomore biology teachers & school counselors!
Apply to bring sophomore biology students to Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center for a half-day science symposium that will explore the world of biomedical research.
Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center is dedicated to supporting science education, and focuses on fostering in students an interest in science and science-related careers. The goal of the student symposium is to give high school students exposure to scientists and to the cutting edge research going on at the Center.
Presentations will take the form of seminars and hands-on activities, emphasizing the research taking place at the Hutchinson Center. Students and teachers will be randomly assigned to one of four groups, each visiting different topic areas.
The symposium, breakfast and lunch are all sponsored by Samuel and Althea Stroum. There is no cost to attending schools. A limited number of grants are available to help subsidize expenses. To apply for one of these grants, include a letter from your principal detailing your specific needs.

The Hutch High program is offered to sophomore-level biology and science students only. The presentations and lab techniques are most appropriate for students of this level.
The maximum number of students a school may apply to send is 10, though fewer may be approved.
We realize that most classes are composed of 30 or more students, and that many schools have more than one biology class wanting to attend. However, in the interest of allowing students from as many schools as possible to participate, these restrictions are firm.
Application Process
Send a letter or e-mail with the following information:
- The name of your school
- The school's mailing address
- Contact person's name, phone number, fax number and e-mail address
- Your plans for transportation (school bus, minivan, etc.)
- A short explanation of why your school/students should be selected to attend
