Program Requirements

Program Overview

General program information and history, as well as descriptions of curriculum components.

Summary of Requirement

All Hutch-based trainees are required, during their tenure at the Center, to complete six Approved Events (see below). One of the six events must be a case study discussion group.

Hutch-based trainees are defined as: graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, or clinical fellows who have their primary or dual mentorship with a Center faculty member or who spend at least 50% of their time at the Center.

Timeline for Completion

Participants are expected to complete at least two events per year beginning in May of 2004. Those whose tenure is less than a year are encouraged to attend at least one event.

Approved Events

All of the following events can be applied towards the requirement.

Combining Requirements from Other Programs

Some postdoctoral researchers, clinical fellows, and graduate students are already required by the federal government to complete Human Subjects Training and/or training in the use of animals for research, or to complete ethics training for NIH training grants. Some programs, like the MCB Program (Molecular and Cellular Biology) also have a research ethics training requirement. Any of the trainings taken for these programs can be applied on a one-for-one basis towards fulfillment of the general research ethics education requirement.

If you completed any of the above training prior to 2003 (the year we began tracking training) submit an Ethics Event Form or contact Lee Strucker at lstrucke@fhcrc.org and we will add this to your record.

Training Received Prior to Association with the Center

Ethics education received prior to being at the Center may be considered as a substitute for part of the Center's training requirement. However, at least two events out of the required six must take place while participants are at the Center. Training prior to being at the Center should be recent, at the graduate level or above, and relate directly to research ethics. For credit, submit the Ethics Event Form on this site.
