As an academic, teaching, and research institution, the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center works closely with a number of other institutions nationwide to further the development of lifesaving, leading-edge therapies, while providing some of the highest quality care in the world. These institutional relationships enable the sharing of research information and the use of some of the most current medical resources available.
Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center has offered transplants to patients since the Fred Hutchinson originated in the early 1970s and has performed more bone-marrow transplants than any other institution in the world. As the program has grown over the years, the goals have always remained the same: to provide outstanding patient care and to develop methods to further improve the outcomes of therapy.
Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA):
In 1998, the Fred Hutchinson joined University of Washington Medicine and Seattle Children's in forming the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA), which unites the cancer-related patient care services of the three organizations. This collaboration will enable Fred Hutchinson's already renowned patient care and clinical research program to expand into new areas with partners who share its clinical care and scientific focus. Both the UW AMC and Seattle Children's have nationally recognized hematology-oncology clinical research programs and are well-known for their excellent care.
The SCCA forms one of the most comprehensive oncology patient care programs in the nation. It combines the strengths of three of the best oncology organizations in the Pacific Northwest. Patient's coming to the SCCA will receive the best cancer care available and latest research-based cancer therapies being developed by its partner organizations, including treatments for a number of malignant and non-malignant diseases and disorders.
The SCCA has three clinical care sites. The outpatient clinic is located on the Fred Hutchinson campus. The clinic has seven floors housing a variety of services for oncology patients. Services include radiation oncology, radiology, a medical laboratory, oncology exam rooms, infusion and apheresis areas, a pharmacy and a breast diagnostic center.
Inpatient services are on four new, state-of-the-art inpatient units. Pediatric patients are cared for on a 38-bed SCCA unit at Seattle Children's, and adult patients are admitted to one of three SCCA units, totaling 86 beds, at the University of Washington Medical Center.
Seattle Veteran's Administration Medical Center (SVAMC):
Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center provides some services for Seattle Veteran's Administration Medical Center (SVAMC) patients being treated on Fred Hutchinson protocols. Examples of these services include: unrelated donor searches, peripheral blood stem-cell collections, and administration of total body irradiation (TBI). The children of SVAMC patients also may attend the Hutch School.
