To look at mop-haired Lexi Frost, you'd never know she had been ill with acute lymphocytic leukemia.

This 7-year-old from Lake Stevens, Wash., just finished eight weeks of downhill ski lessons, studies gymnastics, tap dances and loves to cook.

But two years ago this spring, Lexi underwent a bone-marrow transplant for acute lymphocytic leukemia at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Her brother, Brennan, now 9, donated marrow for the transplant.

"She's leading a normal first-grader's life," said her mother, Michelle.

Lexi and her family participate in many Fred Hutchinson fund-raising and community-awareness events. She even got to throw out the ceremonial first pitch at a Seattle Mariners game. And she's become a poster child of sorts for the Hutch by appearing in an advertisement and on the cover of the 2001 annual report.

Michelle, a nurse, and her husband, Whitney, a physician, said their experience on the patient side was great at the Hutch.

"We have nothing but the highest regard for the Hutchinson Center," said Michelle. "As far as I'm concerned, they gave me back my daughter."
