The National Cancer Institute [NCI]; the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute [NHLBI]; and the Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research [OBSSR] at the National Institutes of Health [NIH] are partnering to provide funds for the Centers for Population Health and Health Disparities [CPHHD] program. This program is designed to better understand and address inequities associated with the two leading causes of death in the United States; cancer and cardiovascular disease. The centers form a network of research teams charged with understanding the complexity of health disparities, rather than single-factor relationships. In addition, each center is developing interventions to address health inequities and is training the next generation of transdisciplinary researchers in collaborative team science.
The overarching theme of the Partnership to Understand and Eliminate Disparate Outcomes [PUEDO] at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center [FHCRC] is to understand and prevent pre-cursors of breast cancer and to reduce breast cancer morbidity and mortality among Latinas. This will be done at multiple levels and will engage researchers across several disciplines. This center engages in interdisciplinary collaboration on several levels, as well as collaboration with researchers at the University of New Mexico Cancer Center. Table 1 summarizes the projects funded through the CPHHD program to the FHCRC.
