Projects
- Breast Cancer and HRT: Genetic Susceptibility within the Progesterone Pathway
- Breast Cancer Risk and Molecular Change After Chernobyl
This study has two primary aims: 1) to investigate whether the risk of premenopausal breast cancer is associated with individual radiation dose to the breast from the Chernobyl accident, to estimate the risk per unit dose, to investigate the shape of the dose- response, and potential dose effect modifying factors, including molecular characteristics and established breast cancer risk factors; and 2) to investigate whether the association of breast cancer risk with radiation exposure differs according to characteristics of breast cancer, including hormone receptor status, genomic loss and gain, and specific alterations in 14 selected DMA repair genes. - C-erbB-2 and Risk of Contralateral Breast Cancer
This Career Development Award expands Dr. Li's previous work on contralateral breast cancer (CBC). - Cancer Surveillance System
The Cancer Surveillance System (CSS) collects population-based data on cancer incidence and survival in 13 counties in western Washington State. These cancer data are collected to provide public health scientists and practitioners with the ability to track trends in the incidence of all forms of cancer (surveillance); identify and investigate patterns of cancer occurrence (epidemiology); and monitor of trends in mortality and survival for specific cancers (end results). - CAREGEN: Genetic susceptibility and the risk of breast cancer
This is an ancillary study of the NICHD Women’s CARE Study, a large population-based multi-center case-control study among Caucasian and African-American women that is designed primarily to evaluate the risk of breast cancer in women ages 35-64 in relation to oral contraceptive (OC) use and hormone replacement therapy (HRT). - Depo-Provera and Breast Cancer: Epidemiology and Pathology
The primary objective of this study is to assess the relationship between DMPA use and breast cancer risk among young women in a large population-based study. - Descriptive Epidemiology and Clinical Course of Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS) within the Group Health Cooperative
An epidemiologic study using patient databases from the Group Health Cooperative to estimate basic descriptive statistics for myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) (e.g., incidence, prevalence, survival) and to track patterns of treatment for the disease. - Energy Balance, Organochlorine Exposure, and Possible Toxicologic Effects
The study builds on resources from an existing randomized controlled trial of exercise, with an extensive assessment of immune function biomarkers. - Epidemiology and Biostatistics Training
Provide skills in epidemiology and biostatistics that will enable the trainee to address this problem through the conduct of high quality cancer research. - EXCEL Study
The ExCel research study is a breast cancer prevention clinical trial. It is an important international clinical trial designed to determine whether a special type of medication can prevent breast cancer in healthy postmenopausal women who are at an increased risk for developing breast cancer. - Factors Affecting Survival of Young Breast Cancer Patients
This study seeks to identify factors that affect the risk of recurrence and death in a cohort of 1400 women diagnosed with invasive breast cancer before age 45. - Genome-Wide Association Study in Early-Onset Breast Cancer
This study aims to conduct a genome-wide association study of young (less than 50 years) invasive female breast cancer to identify new genes responsible for young cases who are negative for BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene mutations. - Geographic Clustering of Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS) and Correlation with Pollution Sources
This study constitutes one of the first large population-based investigations of incidence patterns of myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) in the United States. - Health, Eating, Activity, and Lifestyle (HEAL) Study
A study to investigate methods to improve breast cancer survival - Identification and Validation of Circulating Biomarkers of the Early Detection of Breast Cancer in Pre-clinical Specimens
This study aims to are to use three proteomic platforms to identify protein biomarkers in preclinical sera that could potentially be used for the early detection of breast cancer. - Immune Exercise Study
- Markers of B-Cell Stimulation as Potential Predictors of Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma
We are conducting a nested case-control study of biologic markers of a B-cell stimulatory host environment as predictors of B-cell NHL among 500 cases and 500 pair-matched controls from the WHI Observational Study (OS), among whom biologic samples were collected an average of 10 years before NHL diagnosis. - Migraine, Migraine Medication Use, and Breast Cancer Risk
- Molecular Change and Thyroid Cancer Risk After Chernobyl
This study will investigate the occurrence and molecular characteristics of thyroid cancer in residents of the Bryansk Oblast of the Russian Federation who were up to 50 years of age at the time of exposure to radiation from the Chernobyl Power Station accident on April 26, 1986. - Molecular Epidemiology of Endometrial Cancer
This study tests the hypotheses that the risk of developing endometrial cancer is related to variation in genes that encode for enzymes: 1) involved in the biosynthesis or catabolism of estrogens, or in the response to steroid hormones, and 2) that repair DNA damage generated during estrogen exposure. - Molecular Epidemiology of Lung Cancer
A study determining whether polymorphisms of enzymes involved in the repair of smoking-induced DNA damage, namely those from the base excision (BER) and nucleotide excision repair (NER) pathways, are associated with risk of lung cancer. - Night Shift Workers and Hormone Levels in Men
This study will be the first effort to assess the effects of night shift work on melatonin and the hormones of most interest in the etiology of prostate cancer. - Night Shift Workers and Hormone Levels in Women
- NSAIDs and Other Medications in Prostate Cancer Etiology
The objective of this study is to determine whether use of NSAIDs and other frequently used medications are associated with risk of prostate cancer. - Oral Cancer: Molecular Profiles & Clinical Outcomes
Our goals in this study are to determine whether: 1) The prognosis of OSCC patients is associated with tumor gene expression profiles; 2) OSCC tumor characteristics known to be related to patient outcome - such as stage and nodal status - are associated with tumor gene expression profiles; and 3) Tumor gene expression differs among invasive OSCC, pre-neoplastic oral squamous cell lesions, and normal oral tissue. - Physical Activity for Total Health (PATH)
The goal of the study is to examine how moderate exercise may lower breast cancer risk - PROGRESS Study
- Protein Biomarkers of Cancer Risk in Older Persons
Using a case-cohort study design, this study evaluates if baseline plasma proteomic patterns can be used to distinguish between subjects who will and will not develop breast, colorectal, lung, and prostate cancers. - Quilt Study
The Quilt Study is a study of predictors of disease progression and recurrence in women diagnosed with breast cancer at ages 45-79 to identify pre- and post-diagnosis exposures and events that may increase the risk of recurrence; assess pre-diagnosis exposures for their association with tumor characteristics and risk of recurrence; and
evaluate how tumor markers, both ones currently used in clinical care and novel ones not currently in use, relate to breast cancer progression or recurrence across age groups. - Random Digit Dialing Methodology for the 21st Century
- Residential Proximity to Industrial Facilities and Risk of Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma
We are investigating long-term environmental exposure to industrial pollutants as a risk factor for NHL. - Role of Air Pollution in Rheumatoid Arthritis Incidence and Exacerbation
This study is investigating ambient air pollution as a contributor to rheumatoid arthritis (RA) incidence and exacerbation, with a focus on exposure to particulate matter. - Role of Missense Changes in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 Breast Cancer Susceptibility Genes in Breast Cancer Among African-American Women: A Population-Based Approach
The aims of this project are to conduct a series of statistical and laboratory analyses, using data and samples from a recently completed population-based study of breast cancer, to investigate the clinical significance of missense changes in BRCA1 and BRCA2 in African-American women. - Tamoxifen & Second Breast Cancer: Epidemiology and Pathology
