Cancer Prevention Program
The Biomarker Lab resides within the Cancer Prevention Program in the Public Health Sciences Division. It support epidemiological and clinical studies in collaboration with researchers both internally at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and at other institutions such as Harvard, UCSF, University of Washington, and University of Illinois College of Medicine. We specialize in assays related to nutritional biochemistry and the discovery and validation of cancer risk biomarkers. We develop, validate, and perform a wide range of assays from lipids and vitamins, to cytokines, and global methylation. The assay platforms we use include chromatography, chemistry analyzer, atomic absorption spectroscopy, ELISA, and Luminex. We implement rigorous quality control procedures from sample tracking to data review and management.
The Molecular Epidemiology Lab provides investigators working on population-based studies with laboratory-based research expertise through a collaborative scientific relationship. The lab is headed by Dr. Karen W. Makar in the Cancer Prevention Program and supports epidemiological and clinical investigators at FHCRC and their collaborators at other institutions. In addition to assisting with biospecimen management and assay development, the laboratory specializes in four major research areas: (1) Genotyping services for candidate genes and polymorphisms, with a focus on low- to mid-plex genotyping using a variety of methods, including Taqman allelic discrimination on an ABI 7900HT instrument and Illumina Veracode GoldenGate technology on the BeadXpress reader. (2) Gene expression in tissue biopsies using both Taqman qRT-PCR and microarray technologies. (3) Tumor Characterization. (4) Immunology including flow cytometric analysis of lymphocyte populations from whole blood, and the isolation of specific B or T cell populations using magnetic bead enrichment and FACS sorting.
There is compelling evidence that dietary patterns affect risk of several major cancers as well as other diseases. The Hutchinson Center is engaged in human nutrition research and dietary assessment is a key, shared methodology within this research. Thus, the Nutrition Assessment Shared Resource (NASR) was formed in July of 1993. The NASR makes it possible for investigators without nutrition training and expertise or without the time and funding, to incorporate state-of-the-art dietary data collection methods in their research protocols. In-house processing of dietary data allows for a high degree of standardization, rigorous quality assurance procedures, control of data management and maximum flexibility to expand the use of the Minnesota Nutrition Data System for Research (NDSR) food and nutrient databases. The NASR collects and analyzes 24-hour dietary recalls, multiple day food records both documented and undocumented, modified dietary intakes, and standard or customized food frequency questionnaires. The NASR also provides nutrition researchers the means to develop and implement new methods of dietary assessment suited specifically to each study's goals.
