Scientists at the Hutchinson Center are on the verge of making this vision a reality. More than 30 years of world-renowned research, combined with stunning new technologies, have culminated in opportunities for significant progress in solving human health problems.
Denise Galloway, Ph.D.
Dr. Denise Galloway has devoted her career to understanding how a group of human papillomaviruses (HPVs) cause genital diseases, including cervical cancer. In the 1990s, her breakthrough research helped lay the groundwork for the HPV vaccine to prevent cervical cancer. The vaccine is expected to save more than 270,000 lives worldwide each year.
Thanks to private support from President’s Circle donors and others, Denise is now focusing her knowledge on related important research issues. Some 20 percent of the world’s cancers – cancers that kill nearly two million individuals worldwide each year – are caused by infectious agents, and Denise believes there are more virus-related cancers yet to be discovered. She is working with colleagues to learn more about the pathogens known to contribute to cancer and identify the undiscovered ones so the success of the HPV vaccine can be extended, saving even more lives.
