One million bone marrow transplants performed worldwide. That’s the milestone we’ll reach this year. Arguably one of the greatest successes in medical research, bone marrow transplantation has transformed leukemia and related cancers from death sentences to some of today’s most curable diseases.

With ingenuity, tenacity and compassion, Dr. E. Donnall Thomas took bone marrow transplantation from radical experiment to standard, curative therapy. In the process he changed the world forever: Transplants are now used globally to treat tens of thousands of patients with dozens of different diseases each year, and Dr. Thomas’ discoveries have sparked whole new areas of research, including the promising field of immunotherapy, each with the potential to produce more revolutionary advances.

As we surpass one million transplants worldwide — all of which can be traced directly back to Dr. Thomas and his team in Seattle — we look to the future of transplantation and related therapies.

Gifts from the Hutch Holiday Gala will honor Dr. Thomas as an exemplar of innovation. They will celebrate the courage of all the patients who helped shape this cure. They will inspire today’s trailblazers who, like Dr. Thomas, pursue breakthrough research at the Hutch with an unwavering commitment to saving lives. And most importantly, they will provide hope.

Thanks to the generosity of The David and Patricia Giuliani Family Foundation, gifts made through Help the Hutch at the Hutch Holiday Gala will be doubled, up to $1.5 million, helping Fred Hutch researchers directly improve survival and quality of life for thousands of patients.

Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center is a world leader in research to prevent, detect and treat cancer and other life-threatening diseases.
