Applicant Information

We invite middle and high school science teachers from public schools, private schools, or home schools in Washington State to apply.

Each application is read by SEP mentor scientists, and each mentor selects one teacher-applicant as a partner for participation in SEP. Twenty-five teachers are selected each year to join the SEP community.

Applications for the 2013 cohort will be accepted online beginning  Jan 1, 2013.

Applicants will be notified if they have been selected by April 15.

What time commitment does the SEP program require?

You must commit to attending ALL scheduled days in order to participate.


Scheduled days for the 2013-14 SEP program include:

* Opening Day: Saturday, May 18, 2013
* Summer Session: Weekdays, July 15 - July 31, 2013
* Kit Signup Day: Saturday, September 21, 2013
* Reflection Day: Saturday, May 3, 2014

During the program teachers keep a laboratory notebook, prepare a curriculum project, and participate in program evaluation. Click here to download a PDF of program requirements.

Additional requirements:

  • Participants are responsible for any lodging and food expenses, as well as transportation to and from Seattle. If this poses an impediment to participating, please explain and send in this additional form with your application. Application addendum
  • Your district must commit one day of release time, or equivalent, as evidence of support for your application.

Program perks:

  • Participants receive a $500 stipend for their training.
  • Upon completion of all program requirements, participants may earn 5 hours of graduate level credit (at low cost) through the University of Washington Department of Genome Sciences or 50 clock hours through WSTA.
  • Ongoing access to SEP Kits, resources, technical support, and surplus lab supplies.
