Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center scientists are producing some of the most important breakthroughs in disease research using a comprehensive approach that touches each step of the disease cycle – from prevention and detection, to treatment and survivorship. Our work includes contributions to the HPV vaccine for cervical cancer prevention, non-invasive tests for cancer, the development of bone marrow transplantation and the study of chemotherapy’s long-terms affects on health. Additionally, we are exploring fundamental questions in biology through basic research. Our work specifically includes:
- Fundamental Science – The Center’s Basic Sciences Division is answering fundamental biological questions and producing some amazing knowledge for the benefit of science.

- Prevention – We are working to prevent diseases before they develop, and in the process helping people live happier, healthier lives.

- Early Detection – The sooner cancer and other diseases can be detected, the sooner they can be treated. Our investigators are identifying more efficient, accurate and less-invasive ways to find diseases when they are most treatable.

- Treatment & Cures – The Center pioneered bone marrow transplantation, one of the greatest advancements in the history of medicine. Today we are building on that tradition with advances in immunotherapy, safer chemotherapies and new drugs for multiple sclerosis. We’re also working to prevent HIV infection.

- Survivorship – Surviving disease is a lifelong endeavor, so our scientists research life after cancer. This ongoing expertise has helped establish us as a leader in the emerging field of survivor care.
