Quest Fall 2002

Cancer is not one but many diseases. There are an estimated 300 different types of cancer, and while they all share some similarities, they also have significant differences.

Until recently, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center focused its clinical research on cancers originating from blood cells—such as leukemia and lymphoma—and developed successful new therapies with bone-marrow and stem-cell transplantation. An unexpected outcome of this research was the discovery that the immune system can fight cancer. The hope that this discovery can be applied successfully to other types of cancer has led us to expand our work into solid-tumor research.

To help build this research, in 1999 we formed the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, which combines our cancer research and treatment with that of the University of Washington Academic Medical Center and Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center. We recently took this partnership a step further by forming a comprehensive cancer consortium with our partners.
