Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center Dear friends of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center Survivorship Program,

Vitamin D, specifically vitamin D3 or cholecalciferol, has become quite the hot topic lately. Medical journals are overflowing with the latest research findings on vitamin D and the many ways it protects one's health, including cancer prevention. Vitamin D may help prevent cancer in several ways, including maintaining healthy cells with normal life spans, discouraging out-of-control cell reproduction, and hindering the formation of new blood vessels for tumors. Higher blood levels of vitamin D have been associated with substantially lower incidence rates of colon, breast, ovarian, renal, pancreatic, aggressive prostate and other cancers.

To help you stay informed, this edition of "Survive and Thrive" focuses on vitamin D and issues important to cancer survivors. We hope the information provided will help you make good choices for promoting your healthiest life possible.

Wishing you well,

K. Scott Baker
